Advancements

Obtaining

Advancements can be completed in any game mode, and are obtained and saved per world. Advancements can also be granted (and revoked) using the /advancement command.

Although advancements guide players logically through the game, they are independent of each other; an advancement can be completed without having completed the advancements "before" it.

When an advancement is obtained, a sliding toast notification displays in the top right corner as well and a message will be displayed in chat. The color of the header text in the notification depends on the advancement; normal and goal advancements have yellow header text, while challenge advancements have pink header text. Completing a normal advancement will make the header text display "Advancement Made!", completing a goal advancement will result in a "Goal Reached!" header and a challenge advancement will give "Challenge Completed!".

The advancements interface. One advancement ("Isn`t It Iron Pick") is selected.

The button to access the Advancements screen is found on the pause menu screen. You can also open this screen by pressing L (this can be changed in the in-game options The main options menu The video settings menu The music and sound options menu Minecraft’s user environment can be configured through the Options setting. A few additional options can only be changed by editing the minecraft menu).

The advancement system involves several trees composed of advancements, each tree beginning with a root advancement and ending with goal or challenge advancements. By clicking and dragging, you can view different branches of an advancement tree. Each tree is categorized into different tabs (which are, themselves, advancements). There are currently five tabs in vanilla Minecraft (although more may possibly be added):

  • Minecraft: The heart and story of the game.
  • Adventure: Adventure, exploration, and combat.
  • Nether Nether may refer to: The Nether, a hell-like dimension, filled with fire, lava, and dangerous mobs. Advancements#Nether, an advancement by entering the Nether dimension. This disambiguation page lists articles associated with the same title. If : Bring summer clothes.
  • The End: Or the beginning?
  • Husbandry: The world is full of friends and food.

Each tab has a different background with a repeating texture.

Advancement icons display a header name and description when hovered over. They only appear in a tree when the advancement before it is completed, although, as stated before, advancements can be completed in any order.

The icon frames of advancements can vary in appearance based on difficulty, and whether or not it was completed. A legend is provided below:

    Overview

    Dinnerbone demonstrating the Advancements system.

The names of advancements sound more like a type of action, compared to the former achievement names. However, the names can also be customized through a JSON file. Advancements are earned by players as they complete various tasks within their Minecraft world. Unlocking advancements does not grant players any physical benefits to gameplay, they are simply a way of documenting what a player has accomplished. They also serve as a way for players to see how far their fellow players have progressed within a particular Minecraft world. When an advancement is earned, all players within the Minecraft world will receive the following server message:
" has made the advancement Advancement Name. "

There are various tabs to the advancement interface, each containing different advancement trees. There are currently five tabs (although more can be added by adding custom files).

    • Minecraft: The story and the heart of the game.
    • Adventure: adventure, exploration, and combat.
    • Nether: Bring summer clothes.
    • The End: Or the beginning?
    • Husbandry: The world is full of friends and food.

Advancement icons display a header name and description when hovered over. They only appear in a tree when the advancement before it is completed, although, as stated before, advancements can be completed in any order. The icon frames of goal advancements are more rounded while challenge advancements have a sharper appearance. Advancement icons begin as light-gray but will turn dark-golden when completed.

Examples of the icon frame and description of the advancements are as follows.
